Who can come to Canada under the sponsorship programs?

  • Spouse or Common-law partner

Whether your spouse or common-law partner is living in Canada on a temporary visa or residing abroad, you may be eligible to sponsor them for Canadian permanent residency. Applicants living in Canada may also qualify for an open work permit – giving couples a chance to ease their financial burdens. Also, Canada recognizes common-law partnerships. How can you be eligible to sponsor a family member?

To be able to sponsor a family member to Canada, you would be mandated to meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

  • be at least 18 years old

  • live in Canada, or plan to return to Canada once your spouse or partner becomes a permanent resident of Canada

  • be able and willing to provide for the basic financial needs of your family member for three years

How much does it cost to sponsor a family member?

If you plan on applying for a Canada PR from India with your spouse – and they have dependent children, or if you are sponsoring your dependent children, a $150 payment will be required for each child included in the application. If you are including the spouse or partner of your relative, an additional $1,050 is required. 

Provided that you meet the eligibility for Canada PR or citizenship, you would be mandated to pay the following fee – when sponsoring a family member to Canada: 

  • Sponsorship fee: $75

  • Principal applicant processing fee: $475

  • Right of permanent residence fee: $500

  • Biometrics: $85

Total: $1135

How long does the sponsorship take?

The processing time to apply under the Family Sponsorship program is historical, meaning the current wait time is measured based on how long it took – Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), to process 80% of the applications in the past. 

  • If you’ve applied via post: The processing time starts when your complete application arrives in IRCC’s mail room. 

  • If you’ve applied online: The processing time starts when you submit your application. 

At current processing times, sponsorship applications take approximately 12 months to process from start to finish. They can take longer depending on the nature of your case. 

There is no limit to the number of members meeting the eligibility for Canada PR under the family sponsorship program. However, you must submit a separate application for each eligible family member.
